As per minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, “Punjab continues to enjoy the status of bread basket of India as it plays an important role in contributing the largest part of central food grain pool. Working in close cooperation with Government of India, Food Corporation of India and other procurement agencies in Punjab, the Department has, over the years, created a reputation of being a leader in introducing innovation in the field of food grains procurement and storage. The department is aiming at end to end computerization by creating a large database of all Arhtiyas, Mills and Mandis, Ration Card holders and Fair Price Shops”.

The department of food civil supplies and consumer affairs, Government of Punjab initiated the new Atta – Dal scheme, which has beneficiaries of about 1.42 crores. The scheme provides annual entitlement to the eldest women of the family, who shall be considered the head of the family. The wheat shall be delivered to the beneficiaries, (who own an aadhar card) in standard packing of 30 kg, at the meagre rate of Re. 1 per kg. All the department officials, the beneficiaries, the transporter, the village panchayat, and the associated committees, all will to work in coordination.

In contrast to the Atta – Dal scheme, the government of Punjab has initiated various other schemes in the favor of the blue card holders, which includes the Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Bima Yojna (BPSSBY). The BPSSBY scheme operates in accordance to the United India Insurance Company Limited with a view to provide insurance cover to the families who are Below Poverty Line. The chief minister of the state, Parkash Singh Badal claimed that about 28.05 lakh Blue Card Holder families are endowed with the facility of cashless treatment up to an amount of Rs. 30,000. The scheme operates successfully in about 214 government hospitals and 216 impaneled private hospitals in the Punjab state. The applications in the BPSSBY scheme are invited through the prescribed empanelment form.

In order to keep a check at the issuance of blue cards, the state government even initiated the verification of the blue card holders so that the beneficiaries are entitled to the availing schemes of the Punjab government, in a prompt, efficient and hassle free manner. Needless to say, the stringent and favorable schemes of the Shiromani Akali Dal – BJP led state government have been conducive towards the needs of the blue card holders. Such schemes are successfully brightening up the state. It would not be wrong to claim that Punjab’s rise has been a defining storyline of the 21st century.
