Punjab’s economy has been rolling along nicely. Fiscal year 2014 – 2015 notched an impressive Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate in the state, with the agricultural sector contributing in large numbers to the state economy. Despite the catastrophic white fly attack in the state, agriculture posted positive yield in the last quarter.
Punjab being an agrarian state, the Shiromani Akali Dal – BJP led government of the state has been conducive to the needs of the farmers which is clearly evident from the farmer friendly policies and initiatives undertaken by the state government. One such initiative is the Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Bima Yojana of the Health and Welfare department.
What is Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Bima Yojana?
Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Bima Yojana, was launched by the Health and Welfare department of the Government of Punjab. The scheme covers approximately 11 lakh families, under the Atta Dal Scheme of the Government of Punjab. The scheme provides insurance covers to the farmers, which is appointed by the United Insurance Company Limited.
The Punjab cabinet, under the proficient guidance of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal took the revolutionary step of approving the conversion of an ordinance into a bill which is to be presented in the forthcoming session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the Health and Personal Accident Insurance Scheme for all those farmers, who bring their produce to the Marketing Yards established by the Punjab Mandi Board. All such farmers shall be provided a health insurance cover of Rs. 50,000 and personal accident insurance cover of Rs. 5 lakhs under the Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Bima Yojana scheme.
The main benefits of this scheme includes providing cashless basis to the beneficiaries up to the limit of their annual coverage, in accordance to the package charges on specific procedures and subject to other terms and conditions.
The scheme shall provide coverage for meeting up with expenses for medical and/ or surgical procedures including maternity benefit, to the enrolled families for hospitalization up to Rs. 30,000 per family, per year which is subject to certain limits. The total reimbursement of Rs. 30,000 can be availed individually, or collectively by all members of the family. Coverage of health services related to surgical nature shall also be provided on a regular basis.
Pre and post hospitalization costs up to 1 day prior to hospitalization, and up to 5 days from the day of discharge shall be a part of the package rates. Maternity and Newborn Child coverage shall also be covered under the scheme.
Needless to say, the radical plan under the Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Bima Yojana by the far sighted government of Punjab shall definitely be successful in ameliorating the sufferings of the rural poor of the state.
