The department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy development and fisheries organized the National Livestock Championship and Expo, 2016 under the fathomless help of Department of Rural Developments and Panchayats. The National Livestock Championship and Expo, 2016 took place at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, Sri Mukatsar Sahib from 8th Jan – 12th Jan, 2016 on the occasion of Maghi mela.
The main objectives of the 8thNational Livestock Championship and Expo, 2016 were –
- To promote and develop livestock, dairy, fisheries, horse breeds and equestrian sports.
- To enable the farmers to produce quality animals.
- To accelerate the economic gains of the farmers.
- To initiate competitions, with the motive of appraising the efficient and effective livestock of the state.
The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and the Rural Development Department of Punjab provided financial aid to The National Livestock Championship and Expo, 2016. Participants from across the country actively participated in the ongoing events at the expo. There were about 67 competitions in Livestock championship and expo, which included of polo exhibition matches, rabia chaal, flat race, Ferrier competition and other equestrian events. There were various milking competitions and other events for buffalo: Murrah or Nilli Ravi, cows: Holstein Friesian, Jersey and Sahiwal, sheep, goat, pig, poultry, horses and dogs, during the five days of bout.
The 8th National Livestock Championship and Expo 2016 attracted youth, peasantry and international tourists from across the globe, owing to its vibrant and enthralling set of events. Earlier, the event took place at a district level. However, with time immemorial it gained national significance and even attracted international delegates for participation.
Numbers sourced from the cattle census, 2012 state that there are approximately 24.30 lac cows and 51.52 lac buffaloes in the state. In contrast to which, the entire production of milk in Punjab is 103.5 lac tonnes in the year 2014 – 2015. It is a matter of pride, that even though Punjab comprises of 2% of the total population of the country, it contributes 8% of milk production to the country. H.S. Sandha, the Director of Animal Husbandry, Punjab pro-actively participated in the functioning of the event.
The National Livestock Championship and Expo, 2016 even comprised of fascinating seminars on various subjects such as animal husbandry, dairy, goatery, piggery, food processing and the indigenous breeds of cattle followed by interactive sessions between the experts and the farmers. Various cultural contests, motorcycle shows, horse riding, martial arts, folk dances and songs added charm to Expo.
Under the proficient guidance of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal – BJP led government honored the winners of the competitions with certificates and cash prizes worth Rs. 1.5 crores. It would not be wrong to claim, The National Livestock Championship and Expo, to be the ‘Pushkar mela’ of Punjab. The event witnessed high spirits and dedication by the farmers, which ultimately led to the development and promotion of dairy, piggery, goatery, fisheries and livestock, thereby accelerating the economic growth of the state.
