Punjab has been taking special care of its rural population always, keeping in mind that majority of population in the state stays in rural areas. While the state is dependent majorly on agriculture, hence most of the population hails from these villages and contributes the most in the state’s economy.
The ‘Mukh Mantri Pendu Vikas Yojana’ was announced in the Punjab budget an year back and is a well laid out plan for development of 12500 villages of the state. The government has allocated a sum of Rs 600 crore under the scheme.
The intention of the Punjab government is very clear from this scheme. When Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa announced the scheme last year in his budget speech, the move was welcomed by all. It even won accolades from the NRI community, for the initiative which was a move in the right direction.
Under the scheme thrust is on providing the basic amenities to villages of Punjab, but it also envisages in bringing about a complete revolution in the state in terms of bringing about a positive change in the lives of people staying in these villages.
This move of the government has also helped in bringing about accountability of officials and transparency in the functioning of the government. The chief minister of Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal is taking a keen interest in the scheme and since it happens to be among many of his dream projects, the government is supporting the cause effectively.
This scheme is not just focussed to villages but aims at ensuring a complete development of the state and also to make sure that the downtrodden are promised a better standard of living.
The very name of the scheme, Chief Minister’s Pendu (which means village) Vikas Yojana brings out the essence of it. On the other hand while the scheme lays thrust on providing he basic amenities to villages the government had decided to spend over Rs 2500 crore for developing the infrastructure of villages and the amount is to be spent till March 2016.
The Punjab villages are being developed as model villages and the government has under the said plan kept on priority the sanitation aspect which includes ensuring proper drinking water supply with no compromise on its quality, proper sewerage system.
There are some noteworthy plans like coming up with places for the elderly, gyms for the youth population of the villages besides also ensuring every village has a cremation ground.
BOX: All Punjab villages to enjoy 4G Services
In an effort to bring technology for the rural population, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has recently announced that all villages of Punjab will be connected with 4G services by the end of 2016. The objective of the project is to bring technology to every home and also to enable them make use of online government services sitting at home. The quality services would give the convenience of their work being done without going to government offices and this will also give the state the distinction of being the first one in the country to bring 4G services to all villages.
